3D Printers On a Role

  • Heard or seen that Kacha Mango Bite which in the TV ad it shows that it is a xerox of the kacha mangoes :)

Well it may sound odd but such things arent so far in the near future as the dawn of a new begining of 3D Printing has struck the market.

At a consumer electronics show last week in Las Vegas, visitors got to see that it's very likely that 3D printers could soon become as commonplace as a computer is today. Admittedly this technology has been making headlines for some time now, but their application has been largely discussed in the context of revolutionizing manufacturing. Now there are growing signs that 3D printing may, in the not too distant future, show up in some of the most unexpected aspects of our lives. The kitchen is one such place. Once again, technology might be the catalyst that transforms gastronomic culture.

Over the last few decades, technology has arguably had a much greater influence over the food we eat as compared to geography or climatic conditions. While the staples people consume continue to be influenced by geography, climate and culture, their very nature has been transformed by technological advances in genetics, animal husbandry, chemistry and refrigeration, among others. The very taste and nutrient compositions of commonly used food products have been changed by additives and fortifications. All of this has happened on such a large scale that much of what we consume today has only superficial comparison to what our ancestors consumed.

The 3D printers that were showcased in Las Vegas promise that you will be limited only by your imagination when it comes to crafting creatively designed candies, cake toppings and garnishes. These are expected to hit the stores later this year. Of course the longer a technology is around, the less expensive it gets and the wider becomes its scope. For example, refrigeration has widely expanded the range of food people consume even as it has gotten relatively less expensive and more effective. At this moment, getting an eatable out of a printer seems bizarre. However, given the way technology has transformed the way we live, it should not be too surprising if this becomes commonplace in a generation.
