MADURAI: Tamil Nadu Government had lost revenue to the tune of Rs 1,200 crore due to illegal granite quarrying held in the district for the last several years, according to an initial report sent by Collector Anshul Mishra to the authorities.
A detailed survey and inspection was conducted in 51 granite quarries which revealed that 45,000 blocks of granite stones worth Rs 1,200 crore had been illegally mined.
All the 45000 stones had been mined from the poramboke lands (government lands), during the last several years, the report said.
He charged that one particular granite ming and exporting company was responsible for most of the violations and illegal quarrying. Various documents from the company regarding their activities were missing and an inquiry was on to trace them.
The Collector suggested seizing of the properties of those indulged in illegal quarrying.
