An interesting line-up of films will be showcased at the three-day Singapore film festival to be held at the India Habitat Centre from October 1. The films to be screened include 881 by director Royston Tan, Singapore GaGa by Tan Pin Pin, Liao Jiekai Liao Jiekai's Red Dragonflies and Boo Junfeng's Sandcastle.
881 is a story of two childhood friends' fixation with the glitz and glamour of Getai (an energetic stage performance). Singapore GaGa is a bittersweet biography of the country's everyday sounds and sights, often unnoticed amongst the urban noise. With both local and national acclaim, Tan's musical-comedy 881 has had its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival and done the festival rounds.
Pin's Singapore GaGa is a poignant search of the essence of 'Singaporeanness' and seeks to explore the country's history, context and limits. With a loyal following, Pin's film has been screened at notable festivals like Berlin, Pusan, Cinema du Reel, Visions du Reel, Rotterdam and the Flaherty Seminar.
Also on show would be Red Dragonflies, a story of two friends and their search for a world littered with incongruity, absences and traces of childhood dreams and Sandcastle, an 18-year-old En's journey into self discovery amidst his first romance, his grandmother's worsening Alzheimer's and his school-teacher mother's affair.
The film festival will also host conversations with directors Royston Tan and Boo Junfeng post their films' screenings. High Commissioner of Singapore in India, Karen Tan will also be present on the occasion.
