Value of Education: How to Land a Job

  • After graduation, the next battle you have to face is finding a job – and not just a job but a good job. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) predicted in 2012, after looking at higher education graduates between the ages 25 and 34, that if current trends continue, India will account for 40% of all young people with a tertiary education in G20 and OECD countries by the year 2020. India, which produced 11% of graduates in 2010, is expected to overtake the United States and produce 12% of the share of graduates by the end of the decade. This is quite good news.

But the real challenge is how you can use your educational achievement to make a career. Truth is, even if you have good scholastic records, you still need other strategies to boost your chances of getting hired.  Let us start with filling out application forms, making your cover letter or in preparing your resume or curriculum vitae. In filling out application forms, avoid making mistakes. Check your spelling and fill out all details being required. Write legibly. If something does not apply to you, just put NA or not applicable in the space provided for. The same is true with your cover letter. Check it well before submitting it. Your employer must have a clear idea that you know the position you are applying for. Do not forget to sign it. An unsigned letter is a piece of scrap. Your resume or curriculum vitae, on the other hand, talks so much about you. It’s the totality of what you have to offer to your employer. So, make it as attractive as possible. Don’t miss out any important details; otherwise, you will miss the opportunity of getting hired. Once you become short-listed for an interview, be the best version of yourself. Excel. Smile. Look straight into the interviewer’s eyes. Relax and be yourself. Most importantly, be patient. Remember that there are millions out there who are unemployed. So, if you are given the rare chance, do not waste it.
