Two simple ways to include drumstick in the diet

Drumsticks are generally used in South Indian preparations and also in Bengali & Konkani cookery. Though, they are not just limited to said cookery and are enjoyed by and large by people who love to be an experimental with a food. Even though, generally used in sambhar and other lentil preparations, drumsticks can blend well with the curries, koftas and can serve to be standalone dish or an excellent side dish. If think that there is not much you can do with this slim, green juicy vegetable, then try these recipes to outwit the culinary limitations. Here are top two health benefits of drumstick that should know.

    Drumstick curry

This is basic preparation that can try with the drumsticks. If you have package of drumsticks with you and does not know how to use it, make the curry out of them.

    How to prepare

Wash and scratch the drumsticks, but remember that not to peel it completely. With knife just scrape off skin a bit, gently.

Wash them carefully and cut them into the sizes of 2 inches.

Next, heat oil in pan and add mustard seeds to it. Once the seeds crunch, add 1 chopped onion and sauté till it turns to tender. To this, add 1 spoon of ginger garlic paste & keep sautéing. When the entire mixture turns to golden brown, add 1 chopped tomato and mix it well till the pieces are mashed & cooked well.

Add dry masalas to this mixture like turmeric, red chilli powder, coriander powder, garam masala powder and sauté well. To make mixture more consistent add water to it and let it cook for 2 minutes. Add the freshly cut drumsticks to it and put the flame to simmer.

Close the lid and allow drumsticks to cook for a while. One can add more water and adjust its consistency. When the drumsticks turn tender remove from flame and serve hot with phulkas or steam rice.

    Drumstick in lentil preparation

When we think about drumsticks and lentil, we think the sambhar. On the other hand, there are other ways of cooking drumstick with a regular dals that would turn to an excellent dish. A traditional South Indian preparation called ‘murungakai poricha kuzhambu’ is made with 2 kinds of lentils and drumsticks. The ingredients and condiments used are a little different from what you would use to make sambhar.

    How to prepare:

For this preparation, heat oil in pan and add few black peppercorns and dried red chillies to it. Stir it for   while and then add ½  cup of chana dal, 2 spoonful of coriander seeds and two spoons of urad dal to it.

Fry the ingredients in the oil for while till they change colour and become golden-brown, sending out relishing fragrance. Add freshly grated coconut to it and sauté for few minutes.

When the masalas are cooked thoroughly, remove it from the flame and put all ingredients into a blender and blend at high speed.

Meanwhile, in pressure cooker, boil equal amounts of chana and tuar dal together and keep aside. Next, heat oil in pan and add mustard seeds to it. Once the seeds start to flutter add cumin seeds and few curry leaves.

Next, add freshly cut drumsticks to it and 1 chopped tomato, and allow them to cook for a while. Pour little water from the boiled dal and close the lid.

Once the drumsticks turn tender. add the grinded masala to it and allow it to simmer.

Next add the boiled dals to pan and allow it to cook for while. Once the dals blend well with the masala, take it off flame and serve hot with the steam rice.
