Medemblik, de oudste stad in Westfriesland, werd al bewoond voordat het door graaf Floris V werd versterkt met de bouw van dwangburcht Radboud. In 1289 kreeg Medemblik stadsrechten en de stad dankt zijn naam aan het verdwenen veenriviertje Medemelake. Met zijn historische charme en ligging aan de voormalige Zuiderzee is Medemblik een klein, maar karaktervolle bestemming. Archeologische opgravingen tonen aan dat Medemblik al lang bestond voordat graaf Floris V zijn dwangburcht bouwde in de late 13e eeuw. In 1289 kreeg Medemblik als eerste stad in de regio stadsrechten, wat nog steeds op 25 maart wordt gevierd. Medemblik lijkt te zijn ontstaan bij de monding van de Leeck, een kunstmatig kanaal dat mogelijk werd gegraven om water uit de binnenstad af te voeren.
